Purpose
Established in 1869, the International Review of the Red Cross (IRRC) is a peer-reviewed, academic journal produced three times a year by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and published by Cambridge University Press. It offers an academic forum for discussion and debate about international humanitarian law and contemporary humanitarian action as well as analysis of the causes and characteristics of conflicts, providing clearer insight into the humanitarian problems they generate. It aims to stimulate research and promote knowledge and critical analysis of international humanitarian law, humanitarian action and policy. The IRRC is produced in English and regular selections are translated into Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish and other languages on an ad hoc basis.
The Editor-in-Chief of the IRRC is responsible for leading and managing the content production, the effective outreach and promotion of this unique journal in IHL and humanitarian action.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Set the strategic orientation for a solid and cutting-edge content production and outreach capacity of the IRRC.
- Select the thematic topics, develop the editorial line and ensure the editing and publishing of the three issues of the Review, annually.
- Ensure the production of the regular language selections by liaising with colleagues in the field.
- Animate the Editorial Board of the IRRC, by engaging with Editorial Board members on specific IRRC related issues and more broadly on law and policy issues of interest to the Department of International Law and Policy as well as the wider institution.
- Liaise with contributors to the IRRC within and outside the ICRC.
- Contribute to the promotion and distribution of the IRRC, in particular by representing the IRRC at public and academic events and, if needed, on advisory boards.
- Support events related to the IRRC in Geneva and in the field, including launch events and debates surrounding the thematic topics of the journal.
- Maintain the IRRC’s relationship with Cambridge University Press.
- Lead and manage a team of up to 3 members.

- Internally, interacts with the governance body of ICRC, the Directors, and with the Operation teams at headquarters and in the field.
- Externally, interacts with senior figures in academic circles, partners within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, governments, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and international organizations in Geneva and worldwide.
Education and experience required
- Post-graduate qualifications in law, international relations or international politics with a demonstrated specialization in IHL, international law and humanitarian action.
- Fluent command of English and French; other languages is a plus.
Professional Experience required
- Strong knowledge of IHL and other relevant norms.
- Confirmed experience on issues related to humanitarian action.
- Strong analytical capabilities and forward-looking approaches to aspects related to IHL and humanitarian action and policy.
- Representation skills, sense of diplomacy. Demonstrated capacity to publicly represent the ICRC or another similar institution.
- Outstanding writing skills, and previous publications.
- Experience in carrying out a job with varied substantive and managerial responsibilities, in particular, strong organizational and planning skills.
- Experience in another ICRC function in the field and/or at headquarters an advantage.
- Editorial experience an advantage, in particular, demonstrated ability to interact effectively with academic specialists and substantively influence their outcome.
