About the Job
The Protection Interpreter supports in oral interpretation and with written translations to and from Somali / English and contributes to the achievement of the protection objectives. He/she works closely with the Protection Delegate.
This is a resident/National position based in Nairobi with possible travels to Somalia.
The position is open for a duration of 3 months.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Contributes to the analysis and understanding by the department of the Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) issues in Somalia and more specifically in the geographical area(s) covered
· Supports the protection delegate in establishing and maintaining a network of relevant interlocutors with the humanitarian actors active in the area and the relevant stakeholders for protection issues
· Translates and disseminates information related to protection activities/issues to various audiences and assists in the preparation of dissemination material adapted to the Somali context
· Supports in oral interpretation from Somali to English, and English to Somali during confidential interviews in places of detention, during ICRC institutional dissemination, ICRC dialogue with Somalia authorities, activities to establish the family links, Red Cross Messages delivery, family tracing and with families of detainees
· Translates correspondence, newspapers articles and other essential documents from Somali to English and vice versa
· Supports the department in gathering, analysing and processing of detention or prison related information
Minimum qualifications and required competencies
· Bachelor’s Degree in Languages or any other related field of study
· 4 years’ experience in a similar field in a Humanitarian organization
· Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)/ International Human Rights Law (IHRL) is an asset
· Ability to network, represent the organization externally and in dialogue with major stakeholders
· Ability to analyse the socio-political and cultural environment, the dynamics of conflict zone and inherent humanitarian/protection challenges
· Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
· High level of confidentiality and discretion
· Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali languages
· Proficiency in MS Office suite
