The Communications, Legal and Humanitarian Affairs Department is responsible for defining and implementing strategic communications, managing public and media relations, promoting international humanitarian law to governmental and non-governmental entities, armed forces, academic circles, Red Crescent societies, and fostering support for humanitarian issues and for the ICRC’s activities with a wide range of stakeholders.

Purpose of the post

You will manage all aspects of media relations and digital communications to help raise the profile of the ICRC, manage its reputation and enhance its acceptance in the GCC countries covered by the Regional Delegation (except the UAE). You are passionate about public relations and social media, you are a good story-teller and have a track-record of effectively engaging with a variety of audiences, face-to-face and across digital platforms. You will work in the Communications, Legal and Humanitarian affairs department, in a team of highly qualified and motivated specialists, in a multi-cultural environment.

Planning, management and implementation of Communication programs

o Design, implement and evaluate the Regional Delegation’s communication strategy aimed at promoting knowledge and acceptance of the ICRC, its mandate and mission, and international humanitarian law;

o Support communications departments of Red Crescent societies, deliver training in effective public communications planning and management;

o Organize and deliver training sessions on international humanitarian law to media professionals.

Public relations

o Efficiently manage media relations, organize press conferences and interviews, to promote the coverage of ICRC humanitarian activities and themes of institutional interest at country and regional levels;

o Create and manage powerful AV and print content for online and offline public communications, events, exhibitions (photos, videos, infographics, etc);

o Draft news releases, speaking points, press lines, speeches and briefing notes;

o Represent the ICRC at events and conferences, participate as speaker, moderate panel discussions.

Social media

o Develop and implement the Regional Delegation’s social media strategy, with a particular focus on engagement with decision-makers and influencers, and monitor its success;

o Create, edit, and repackage compelling content for social media, using audio-visual products.

Analysis/reporting and networking

o Contribute to in-depth analysis of humanitarian issues of relevance;

o Manage and expand the network of journalists and social media influencers; Contribute to the ICRC’s institutional planning and internal reporting;

o Contribute to the ICRC’s internal communication.

Required knowledge and experience

· Master degree in communication, journalism and/or public relations;

· At least 5 years of work experience as communication expert in a humanitarian organization or similar field;

· Confirmed experience in public communications, digital communications, including media relations & social media management;

· Excellent writing skills;

· Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, etc.;

· Strong analytical skills and ability to translate complex information into clear and powerful messages;

· Team player, with a high degree of organization, able to work on tight deadlines;

· Fluent in English and Arabic, spoken and written;

· Willing to travel outside Kuwait.
