The ICRC Regional Delegation in Bangkok seeks to fill the following position:

Field Team Leader (Thai Language Skills),

Duty station: Southern provinces in Thailand

Please note that owing to the ICRC's working procedures and principles, in particular the principle of neutrality, we cannot assign personnel to a country of which they are a national for this type of position.

Job purpose

As a Field Team Leader working for the ICRC regional delegation in Thailand, you will lead a team which visits and provides assistance to the civilian population, especially victims of situation-related incidents. You will also be assisting the Protection Team Leader in developing a constructive protection dialogue with (or support to) detaining authorities in their efforts to manage places of detention. Another important duty will be interpretation and translation work for operational activities of the Southern Thailand team. You report directly to the Protection Team Leader of the site where you are assigned.

Main responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Protection Team Leader, your main responsibilities will be to:

Field trips

  • Plan, organize and carry out field visits to civilians

  • Write field trips reports

  • Suggest potential follow-up and/or assistance

Meeting with civilian population and Government bodies

  • Meet with civilians in the office

  • Meet with Government bodies including Police, Military, Local authorities, significant civilian figures

  • Organize institutional dissemination sessions

Translation/Interpretation

  • Oral interpretation (from Thai to English, and English to Thai) during confidential interviews with victims of violence, people deprived of liberty, activities to establish family links, and visits to families of detainees

  • Written translation: translation of Thai (newspaper articles, correspondence, etc.) into written English

  • Preparing ad conducting presentations on various ICRC related topics

    Analysis/Reporting

  • Gather relevant information related to the context as directed by the Protection Team Leader

  • Analyse the humanitarian and security context

    Protection Strategy

  • Understand the Asian Regional and the Delegation operational strategy and support its implementation

  • Keep informed on the developments in Protection matters

    Requirements and experience

  • University education, degree

  • Two years relevant professional experience in Thailand

  • 2 years of professional experience as interpreter or translator an advantage

  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Thai;

  • International experience, preferably in humanitarian sector, would be an asset

  • Certification in interpretation or translation an advantage

  • Fully conversant with IT tools

  • Driving licence (Manual transmission vehicles)
