Purpose of the post

Being a humanitarian worker is an extremely rewarding activity, and ICRC staff have chosen to work for this Institution because they feel highly motivated by the purpose of what they do. Humanitarian workers live and work in physically and psychologically difficult conditions. They are in close contact with victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence, and may themselves face life-threatening situations. They can be confronted to several psycho-social risks, including concerns about their security, confinement, lack of privacy, cultural adaptation, long working hours, intense workload, job security, internal conflicts, mobbing, and sexual harassment.

The ICRC has adopted a Staff health strategy and a Stress policy. Additionally the Code of Conduct compliance office has developed a Policy on the prevention of harassment and sexual harassment in the workplace and on the Prevention and response to sexual violence and other forms of sexual exploitation and abuse. In accordance with the institutional duty of care towards all staff members our aim is to sharpen the psychological support provided to our global workforce within the frame of the above policies. The demand for psychological support is also increasing, which is an important and crucial cultural shift. We want to be in a better position to answer the needs that people allow themselves to verbalise.

The overall responsibility for mental health and psycho-social wellbeing of ICRC staff remains with the Institution, the managers and the staff. The Staff health center of expertise acts as an institutional link between all the parties, with a capacity of direct support and orientation. The Staff psychologist is attached to the Staff health center of expertise and maintains a strong link with HR and Operation Departments, the Security and Crisis Support Unit, the Learning and Development Division, the Code of Conduct compliance office, and the Ombuds office.
