Organization: International Committee of the Red Cross
Country: Switzerland
Closing date: 15 Apr 2018

What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the post

The Internal Reporting Unit, which is under the Office of the President, is hiring an internal reporter to work half-time (50%). The reporter will be part of the team assigned to write minutes of monthly meetings of the Directorate. In parallel and depending on the time available, the reporter will assist the Unit in writing a weekly summary of operational and institutional (i.e. ICRC-specific) news and information and to circulate it internally, at headquarters and in the field, through the in-house bulletin (Bulletin interne).

In order to write the minutes of the meetings of the governing bodies, the reporter will be required to read the preparatory documents, to take notes during the meetings and to write minutes that summarize the decisions made and the key discussion points, to a deadline. They will also be required to write articles about these meetings for the in-house bulletin.

In order to assist the Unit to write the weekly news summaries, the reporter will be required to monitor developments in the places where the ICRC operates and in its main areas of work. He/she must have an understanding of advances in humanitarian diplomacy and of humanitarian and operational issues. The reporter must also stay abreast of the major decisions taken by the ICRC’s senior management and governing bodies, and of the president’s activities.

Main responsibilities

Write minutes of Directorate meetings in English and write associated articles for the in-house bulletin.

Work with the internal reporting team to write clear, concise articles for the in-house bulletin, by monitoring and analysing the situations and operations in the five regions where the ICRC operates (Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, and the Near and Middle East) and consulting with the operations coordinators, and then selecting the pertinent information about the ICRC’s main areas of work and the humanitarian and operational issues encountered.

Help the team to circulate the information contained in the in-house bulletin on a weekly basis. Among other things, this involves sending out the in-house bulletin electronically and selecting five articles for publication on the intranet.

Depending on the availability of the other reporters, help the team to write the English summary of the monthly operational meeting on priority themes between Operations at headquarters and the heads of delegations in the field (convened by the Office of the Director of Operations).
