The Legal Adviser is dedicated to the legal support to the armed services and overall law enforcement apparatuses in the Philippines. S/he would work under the supervision of the Head of the Legal Department with colleagues who engage with the AFP, PNP, Coastguard on strategic integration of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other applicable legal frameworks in line with their respective mandates to promote respect for IHL in training, exercises, and practice.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Give presentations on International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law and Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) at Sea to the various services.
- Engage with the services on legal issues of mutual interest such as protection of detainees, missing, and conduct of hostilities
- Support the drafting of manuals on IHL
- Engage on curriculum development for the services where requested.
REQUIRED PROFILE
- University degree in law, preferably with some training in international humanitarian law and domestic criminal law.
- Master's degree or specialization, including in a discipline of public international law an advantage
- Admitted to the bar in the Philippines a requirement.
- 3 years' progressive experience in the legal field.
- Previous engagement with government agencies (armed forces and other security forces).
- Proven knowledge of public international law, preferably international humanitarian law.
- Excellent legal research and drafting skills.
- Training or presentation experience would be an asset.
