Purpose of the post
The Communication Coordinator is the focal point for all matters related to communication at Regional Delegation level (Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala & Nicaragua). S/he is responsible for setting and implementing priorities, objectives and strategies. S/he directs the orientation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of the delegation’s communication and provides technical support to all staff involved in them. S/he contributes to building and implementing an approach in which communication and, where applicable, prevention activities are integrated into other ICRC programmes (e.g. protection, assistance, cooperation).
Main responsibilities
S/he:
- Contributes to and oversees the elaboration and implementation of the regional delegation’s communication strategy, namely during the definition of the annual planning of objectives, strategy, plans of action and budget;
- Ensures that the definition of the COM strategies and the implementation of communication activities in each operational context and at regional level is in line with the delegation’s annual operational objectives;
- Defines, manages and monitors the budget of the Communications department;
- Maintains an effective working relationship with his/her counterparts within the Red Cross Movement;
- Oversees the production of the delegation’s material and ensures it is in line with the ICRC’s messaging, humanitarian priorities and institutional identity.
- Contributes to the ICRC’s perception and acceptation in the region
- Participates in the delegation’s multilateral meetings and offers advice on how best to position the ICRC and communicate on humanitarian diplomacy issues.
- Direct supervision and management of four communication officers in Mexico; Provides support, coaching and technical supervision to communication officers based in the four Missions of the delegation.
- Provides regular support, coaching to COM staffs and oversight in the implementation and spending of communication initiatives.
- Organises regular communication and ad hoc individual meetings;
Maintains a working relationship with the ICRC regional communication centre for the Americas and HQ on issues of common interest.**Your profile:**
Master’s degree (or a combination of a Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience) in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field;
6-8 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations, preferably in an international setting and/or humanitarian sector
Leadership skills and capacity to work autonomously
Capacity to manage and motivate a geographically scattered and culturally diverse team, including several experienced delegation employees
Very good communication skills (oral and writing)
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to negotiate, persuade and influence others
Languages required: Fluency in Spanish, proficiency in English, French would be an asset
Tentative start date: April 1st, 2022
