What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the position

The Head Anaesthetist Headquarter role is fundamental to the good functioning of the Hospital Team by ensuring the delivery of safe anaesthesia and perioperative care to patients in the ICRC hospital projects. As the title suggests, this role requires a senior, experienced doctor leader with a confirmed background in anaesthesia and critical care medicine. There is a strong mentoring element to the role to promote the transfer and exchange of knowledge and skills to resident staff and more junior mobile staff. Leadership skills and excellent communication skills are also required to ensure cohesion and close collaboration within the surgical team leading to the promotion of best practices in patient care.

Main duties & responsibilities

  • Together with the HCP colleagues, supports the planning, implementation and monitors the progress of ICRC hospital projects in the field, assesses programmes' performance, ensures alignment with health/institutional strategies and objectives and reports on results;
  • Provides technical support to field programmes from Headquarters or via field visits in close coordination with relevant Programme Coordinator/Health Coordinator;
  • Ensures the alignment and complementarity between other hospital specialities;
  • Ensures the quality of service delivery by actively developing, updating and promoting standards of care and the application of ICRC guidelines and processes;
  • Contributes to the strategic management of the programme/project and helps develop technical content;
  • Contributes to human resources management in their area of expertise. This includes briefings, debriefings and support for recruitment and pool management;
  • Participates in building up a relevant pool of ICRC anaesthesia specialists and budgeting and planning exercises;
  • Represents the programme in internal and external fora as required;
  • Acts as a focal point for institutional anaesthesia/perioperative medicine related topics;
  • Co-Coordinates and supports training including a War Surgery Seminar and if required ERTC, BEC, Mass Casualty at global levels to internal and external staff and globally when required;
  • Develops and maintains global anaesthesia networks aimed at strengthening the ICRC’s capacity building and operational outcomes.

Relationships

  • Internally, interacts with members of other programmes run by the Health Unit, the Health Programme Coordinator, and non-health delegates in other units and divisions relevant to the programme (e.g. Medical Logistics, Economic Security, Water and Habitat);
  • Externally, interacts with academic contacts, international organizations and relevant clinical and non-clinical counterparts.

Certifications / Education required

  • Medical degree with a postgraduate specialization in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine;
  • At least 10 years of clinical experience post specialization;
  • Further qualification in anaesthesia a strong asset, in particular, pain management & regional anaesthesia;
  • Valid licence to practise in the country of residence;
  • Valid ATLS /or ETC certificate is a plus;
  • Fluent English and French is required and/or other languages of interest to the ICRC is a strong asset.

Professional experience required

  • Minimum 5 years of field experience (ICRC field experience preferred);
  • Recent clinical practice as an anesthetist;
  • Should be able to participate in field deployments;
  • Proven analytical and people skills as well as training and coaching skills;
  • Excellent representational skills;
  • Computer proficiency and literacy in health data tools literate;
  • Solid experience in humanitarian activities;
  • Proven management experience and ability to lead multi-cultural teams;
  • Able to adapt to rapidly changing workload and ability to respond to deadlines;
  • Demonstrate a solutions-based approach to problem-solving;
  • Able to demonstrate excellent team communication skills.
