The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), a neutral and independent humanitarian organization, has a vacancy in Greece for a resident position:

Forensic Specialist (M/F) based in Athens

Under the guidance and close supervision of the ICRC Forensic Advisor for Western Europe, the Forensic specialist in Greece contributes towards the implementation of the ICRC's activities related to the forensic and missing programme through assessments of forensic needs and promotion and implementation of relevant forensic standards, with a particular focus on migrants. S/He is responsible for setting up activities of the ICRC related to proper Management of the Dead (MoTD) and search of missing persons.

General Overview

  • Assist the Forensic Advisor for Western Europe in the implementation of Forensic activities towards the proper MoTD in the Greek Islands;

  • Continue the mapping and networking of relevant actors involved in the MoTD and identification process in Greece;

  • Formulates initiatives and strategies in relation to the development of the forensic and missing programme based in specificities of his/her area of responsibility;

  • Assists the Missing Delegate/Restoring Family Links (RFL) Delegate in the implementation of activities related to the search of missing persons;

  • Provides forensic expertise for field activities on the Greek islands and promotes the objectives of the forensic and missing programme;

  • Conducts and provides training to relevant interlocutors on the islands on MoTD, Forensic Human identification promoting a holistic integrated identification approach including areas of collection of AM / PM data for identification purposes;

  • Independently carries out forensic assessments of the Greek islands on MoTD; Body recovery, documentation and disposition of bodies as well as other issues relating to migration.

Minimum required knowledge & experience:

  • Medical diploma or related degree, with specialisation in Forensics;
  • 5 or more years operational work experience in a similar field of activity;
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written Greek and English;
  • Good computer literacy;
  • Very high organisational and reporting skills;
  • Good rigor, method and analytical skills;
  • Teamwork skills.

Requirements

  • Position is based in Athens, Greece;

  • Employment contract is Greek (i.e. Greek HR Legislation, salary based on Greek market, etc.);

  • The applicant must have all legal authorizations to work in Greece

  • Accommodation is provided only for trips outside of Athens. Accommodation in Athens is not provided;

  • Flexible approach. Position requires a lot of travelling, sometimes for longer periods (approx.70% of time in the islands);

  • Willing to work flexible hours and weekends if required (e.g. to respond to shipwreck management)

  • Ability to work independently.
